Why "Normal" Thyroid Labs Aren't Enough

Your thyroid gland simply isn't producing enough raw T4 (inactive hormone) and T3 (active hormone) to keep up with your body’s demands.
When is happening, your TSH will be high (brain sending more signals to thyroid), but your T4 and T3 will be low (the thyroid isn’t responding to TSH).

Your thyroid is producing enough T4 (inactive hormone), but your body is struggling to convert it into T3 (active hormone) or it’s converting it into Reverse T3 (rT3 - an inactive mirror image of T3 that blocks receptor sites).
When this is happening, your T3 will be low and you will experience symptoms of hypothyroidism, but your TSH and T4 will be “normal” because the thyroid itself is functioning normally.

Even if you produce and convert enough hormone, environmental stressors can block your T3 receptors. If the hormone cannot get inside the cells, your metabolism stalls even though your TSH, T4, and T3 are within a normal or optimal range.
